Who doesn’t look forward to an annual trip to the outlet mall?
Outlet stores can be a great way to save big on designer brands. A Cheapism study showed a savings of around 30% over many brands’ retail counterparts. Not every item available at these stores is a bargain however. And there are many ways you can double-up on your savings as well.

Is It Really A Bargain?
There are two lines of merchandise available at outlet stores; past season leftovers and items made for the outlet. While the former is usually the same high quality clothing and accessories you are used to seeing from your favorite brands, the second option is often cheaper, lower quality goods made specifically for factory stores. Always check the items for quality and irregularities. Some items may even state right on the tag “Outlet” or “Factory.”
Another way to know you are getting the best price is to learn where, besides the brand store, you can purchase items from your favorite designers. Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and others all have their own outlets. These stores carry a number of designer brands and you may be able to pick up a better deal here than the designer’s store.
Not sure if that’s the best price? Pick up your phone and go online. While you probably won’t be able to access outlet prices online you can see if those socks are on sale cheaper at the regular store.
Is There A Coupon For That?
The two largest outlet mall chains in the U.S. are Tanger and Premium Outlets. Both of these companies have websites, newsletters, apps and some kind of VIP club. As a savvy shopper you know there is always insider savings to be had. Tanger does charge $10 to join their VIP Club, but the savings can really add up quickly for frequent shoppers. Your local outlet mall likely has their own Facebook Page as well. Stalk it for advance notice of special sales and exclusive follower coupons.
Do be aware most retailer coupons are not valid at outlet locations however. While most will clearly state this in the restrictions, it’s always best to check if you are making a special trip.
Hit the Clearance Rack
Just like in the regular stores, you will almost always find a clearance rack at the back of the shop. I have scored some amazing deals here, even in those stores that don’t seem to be much of a bargain overall. Always head straight to the back and look for those closeout items. You may be able to pick up some designer duds at just pennies on the dollar.
